Many people think that packaging is another necessary expense. However, your approach to package design should be viewed as an essential investment and not as an expense. Shoppers have more choice – in virtually every category – demanding the need for eye-catching packaging to help their product pop off the shelf and into your cart.
Consider this story. I dropped into my local Shoppers Drug Mart the other day to pick up my wife’s prescription. While I was waiting for it to be filled, I thought I’d grab a few other incidentals. I thought that I would pick up some licorice that I know my wife loves. There were a couple of different kinds to choose from, packaged in a clear plastic bag.
But then something caught my eye. A pack of red licorice that wasn’t wrapped in clear plastic, but in a cool, beautifully designed box. The design clearly stood out amongst the clutter of the other packages. My decision to purchase it was based strictly on the appearance of the package. I simply fell into what most of us do, we base a great deal of our purchasing decisions on the appearance of product packaging.
Here are some product packaging cost considerations:
- Packaging material. Consider using packaging material that’s inexpensive and can easily be sourced. Choosing packaging materials that can be recycled into other containers or reused for other purposes will help you save more money, such as corrugated material. It can also be recovered to create new corrugated materials. Packaging materials that can be used over and over again will not only reduce the wastes and carbon footprints in the atmosphere, it also lessens the need to use new resources and promote sustainability.
- Space. It only makes sense to use appropriately-sized containers for your products. Using enough space means not overfilling or under filling your packages. For instance, utilizing huge containers for small products mean using more packaging materials, more total package weight and more expense on your part. Putting too much items in one container will also compromise the quality and condition of the product especially during shipment. On the other hand, putting less means wasting those extra spaces. It also means spending more on shipment, more fuel used during the transit and more manpower to handle your packages. Cost-effective package designs streamline the process of transporting and distributing the products without entailing more money, energy and manual labor.
- Graphics. You can also make the graphic designs on your package cost-effective. Consider using digital printing if you need limited quantities. Digital printing is not only faster than the traditional methods of printing – say goodbye to plates; it also produces high quality prints that will give your brand more visual. A well-designed package with clear and attractive print is more compelling and attention-grabbing to consumers.
You need to carefully consider your resources if you want to create a cost-effective and eye-catching package. But, starting with corrugated will give you a leg up and with careful planning and execution of graphics, your package stands a good chance at creating a “double-take” by the shopper.
