Containerboard testing

For the containerboard tests, a minimum of 6 square feet of liner or medium is recommended.

Ash Determination (Tappi T244 cm-99 525° C Acid Insoluble Ash)

It is used to measure the content of inorganic non-combustible material in paper such as glass and chemical residue
      - Damaging corrugating rolls

Basis Weight (Tappi T410 om-98)

Basis weight is used to define the grade of linerboard or medium, units are in grams per square meter (g/m²) or pounds per thousand square feet (lb/MSF)

Bending Resistance (Tappi T556 pm-95)

This is used to determine the bending resistance of linerboard, medium and boxboard in the machine of cross machine direction
      - Flexural stiffness of combined board

Caliper (Tappi T411 om-97)

Caliper is the thickness of a linerboard or medium,
reported in millimeters (mm) or thousandths of an inch

Cobb (Tappi T441 om-98)

Cobb is used to determine the water absorptiveness of a linerboard under specified conditions (usually 2 minutes or 30 minutes). Reported as grams per square meter per 2 minutes or 30 minutes

Concora – CMT (Tappi T809 om-99)

Concora is used to measure the flat crush properties of medium. Reported in Newtons (N) or pounds (lb)

Densometer (Tappi T460 om-02)

Densometer is used to measure the porosity of a linerboard or medium, reported in seconds per 100 millilitres (sec/100 ml)

Float Curl (Tappi T832 om-98)

This is used to determine the absorptivity of corrugating medium by floating a specimen on the surface of a vessel of water, and determining the time for the specimen to become saturated.

H&D Stiffness (Tappi T824 om-02)

H&D Stiffness is used to measure the stacking potential of a medium, fluted sample is held in a jig and crushed in the position it would occupy in a box. Reported in Newtons (N) or pounds (lb)

Mullen (Tappi T810 om-98)

Mullen is used as a meaure of the burst resistance of a linerboard, primarily to satisfy Rule 41. Both metric (kilopascals, kPa) and imperial (pounds per square inch, psi) units are used

PDA Liquid Penetration Analysis (Mütek)

This is used to measure the surface wettability and penetration rate of a liquid into a substrate using he change in ultra sound radiation transmission as the measuring implement

Plybond Peel

Plybond Peel us used to measure the internal bond strength of linerboard, reported in kN/m

Ring Crush (Tappi T818 cm-97)

Ring Crush is used to measure the stiffness characteristics of linerboard and medium, reported in Newtons (N) or pounds (lb)

STFI is used to measure the stiffness characteristics of a linerboard or medium, reported in kilo Newtons per meter (kN/m)

Slide Angle (Tappi T815 om-01)

Slide Angle is used to measure the slipperiness of a linerboard or medium, reported in degrees

Smoothness (Tappi T538 om-01)

This is used to measure the surface roughness of paper or paperboard (Sheffield Smoothness)

Tensile (Tappi T494 om-01)

Tensile is used to measure tensile strength of corrugating medium, the force required to pull a test sample apart. Test is conducted on an electronic tensile tester, reported in kN/m, elongation or the % stretch prior to failure is also reported

Water Drop (Tappi T835 om-94)

Water Drop is used to measure the receptivity of a medium to adhesive, measured in seconds

Wax Pick (Tappi T459 om-99)

Wax Pick is used to measure the surface strength of a linerboard, reported as a “wax pick number”

MVTR

This is used to measure the moisture vapor transmission rate of linerboard and corrugated board with or without a moisture barrier at 90% R.H.
